U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - Receivers' ledgers, 1800-ca.1829.

District land office Receivers were responsible for all financial transactions relating to the sale of public lands. Receiver's ledgers are not true ledgers, but contain ledger-type entries in chronological order providing information on accounts for land bought on the credit system. The entries are in chronological order by date of sale, with several entries per page under the buyer's name. Each entry contains the buyer's name and the location of the tract of land. The journals are double-entry with summarized debits to the left and credits to the right. Usually the final payment was recorded several years after the initial payment. Some volumes include a name index. These records provide information on purchasers and reflect the often lengthy process by which purchasers obtained land on credit.
